Overview
We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher with a background in History for
Prof. Belgin San-Akca’s project titled “Dangerous Companions”. The current
research in the project is funded by TÜBİTAK. The candidate will help study
the ethno-nationalist movements within the Ottoman Empire from the primary and/or
secondary historical accounts. The successful candidate is expected to have an advanced
knowledge of English. The knowledge of Ottoman Turkish is desired but not required.
The successful candidate will join a research team of 5 people and fulfill the following
tasks:
• Conduct an extensive literature review on rebellion, armed groups, and
international factors in instigating rebellions within the Ottoman
Empire during the 19th century and early 20th century.
• Compose a list of armed groups that fought against the Empire and
bring together a dataset including major characteristics of groups and
their foreign supporters.
• Develop causal mechanisms to explain the effect of foreign actors on
Ottoman rebellions and civil war onset.
• Work with Prof. San-Akca to develop novel puzzles about the relations
between armed groups and foreign actors and publishable manuscripts
on these puzzles.
This is a full-time position for 12 months beginning on October 1, 2022.
